Let's take a look at the crew. All excellent sailors. All different backgrounds and personalities - we got on very well - "Sandefjord" was a happy ship.
21 year old Fanie Louw from land locked Boksburg, South Africa, had jumped at this opportunity without hesitation. In common with his shipmates, he would willingly give up career and home comforts for the chance of living a dream.
The irrepressible Wally Stright, a 26 year old American with a ready wit and a smile for every occasion. Wally was the one whom kept us laughing during the voyage. A born adventurer, he had just "walked down Africa" before joining "Sandefjord".
No land in sight; time to brush up the navigation!! Barry Cullen, South African, 28, skipper. With ten years of sea service in cargo ships, this was to be his first voyage under sail and he was loving every minute of it.
Mary Clayton, a New Zealand schoolteacher, a fine asset and a credit to the ship. When Mary joined, the press became interested in our voyage! "They won't make it; they'll be fighting", said some. "Nix!" said we, "True romance? Nothing will stop it - otherwise, it's a brother-sister relationship!" And that's the way it worked. Today, 44 years later, Mary is still the much loved "sister" living in Perth, WA with her husband George. They both attended the crew reunion in 2006.
Patrick Cullen, 24, part owner with his brother Barry. It was he who first discovered Sandefjord and, deeply inspired, sensing the strong true heart she still possessed, had initiated the action which led through the refit to this day. The only married crew member, he left behind a wonderful girl who stood by him absolutely, sharing in spirit this important venture.
And Tim Magennis, 32, year old Irishman, journalist, philosopher, sage, raconteur and occasionally, when in the mood, dreamer. He was enthralled with the sea and saw deep meaning in its every mood. This voyage was to be the realisation of a long held ambition.
November 1965 - Patrick, Tim, Mary, Barry - "Sandefjord" on the slip at Panama shortly before heading out into the "Broad, boundless Pacific".
A few moments later, Patrick, Mary, and Tim
41 years later, Oct 2006 - Off Cape Town in a racing yacht made available for our 40 year reunion. Tim and Mary.
