Story and pictures by TIM MAGENNIS
Five men and a girl captured the imagination of South Africa by sailing 30,000 miles around the world in a 47ft. ketch. The hazard and humour of the 19-month voyage across three oceans is related here by journalist Tim Magennis, who was a member of the crew on the epic journey.
Long hair is a nuisance on a long passage, so at the start of each trip heads were cropped. Wally Stright looks like a Buddhist monk as Tim Magennis gives him his full ten cents' worth.
Danger sign for any yachtsman: dark grey, heavy and menacing, a cold front thunders up astern of Sandefjord as she lies becalmed and with all sail down.
Perched on a bucket, her hair streaming over her face, Mary bottles on with her turn of the pumps. No matter how hard the chore, Mary tackled it with a will and always came up smiling.
Mary Clayton who joined the yacht in Cape Town, soaks up the West Indian sun as the ketch ghosts along under blue skies off the lovely island of St. Lucia.
Full of power and grace and with every sail pulling in a fresh breeze, Sandefjord is a picture of loveliness as she
romps over a brilliant blue sea.
